Kacie closed her eyes tightly once more, taking a deep, shaky breath as she did so. Since her last encounter with Sirius, she had decided that it would be best for all parties - besides the other Slytherins, of course - if she just stayed in the Room of Requirement for now. It seemed that, outside the room, she could see Sirius all over the place, and, though it was a bit strange, she found it comforting. He was almost like her guardian angel, in a way. Watching over her wherever she went.
With a sigh, she heaved herself from the large bed in the center of the room, and strode towards the door. She had promised Sirius that she wouldn't, but she couldn't help it. She needed out of this terrifyingly solicitous room. Glancing down the corridors, she practically sprinted through the castle when the coast was clear. She knew exactly where she wanted to go. She had come across it a few times, in her early years at Hogwarts, and she prayed with all her might that it was still there.
She was extremely glad that it was nightfall. Probably past midnight, by the looks of it. Still, she was cautious as she wandered the halls, not slowing until she reached the fourth floor. Soon enough, she found the classroom she was looking for, and practically leaped inside, closing the door behind her with a sense of finality. Kacie stared across the empty room, her breath leaving her in a gasp and her emerald eyes shining with relief as she realized that the mirror was still there. She walked forward hesitantly, not daring to glance at the reflected image until she was seated comfortably, cross-legged before the Mirror of Erised. Counting to three slowly in her head, she opened her eyes....
And gasped. Crouching down behind her, a hand resting reasuringly on her shoulder, was Thomas, his dark brown hair and bright emerald eyes staring curiously, yet with a sense of sadness that made her think that he really was there. Standing just behind him, a small smile on his face, was Sirius. The mirror showed her exactly what she wanted most in the world: love and family. Staring at the two boys in the reflection, it was almost as if it were real. That Thomas was really there. She could feel his hand on her shoulder, but when she lifted her hand to capture his, she was met by nothing but empty air over a lonely girl's shoulder.

James stared at the blank page in front of him. He had been sitting here for the past half hour, trying to get some homework done. He had been able to concentrate more on his homework since that day in the common room. Sirius still wasn't over it, or so it seemed to James, but it had only been a few days. They had had the talk in the dormitory after the whole thing, but James still felt that Sirius was being distant, and in all honesty, it worried him. He didn't want to lose his best friends, not after all they had been through these past seven years.
He shook his head, telling himself that everything would work out between him and Sirius and Remus. The next thing he knew, his mind was on his girlfriend Lily. They had only been dating for a week or two, but they had already had complications. She had been the one to figure out that Remus was a werewolf, and she had made the mistake or talking to the Marauders in the common room. That's when everything had hit the fan. James had only been able to briefly see her since then, usually when he passed her in the halls, at meals, and he saw her when they had classes together. He felt bad though. He wanted to talk to her, wanted to know if everything was alright. Well, he guessed he really wanted to make sure that his world wouldn't crumble down on top of him with Lily as it had with his best friends. He wouldn't be able to stand not having Lily anymore either. She did something for him that neither Sirius nor Remus could do. He just didn't know what that was yet.
He sighed to himself and then glanced at his watch. Great, it was past midnight, but he was in no condition to even think about going to sleep right now. The raven haired boy stood up and stretched, yawning in the process. He guessed he'd better go do some rounds since he couldn't sleep. He closed his books and went up into the dormitory, careful not to wake anyone up. He grabbed his wand and then headed back out. He went down into the common room and through the portrait and into the dark, empty halls or the castle.
This was James' favorite time of night. He loved being the only one out here. He decided to head up to the 4th floor, and do his rounds there, and then work his way back towards the common room. He got to the 4th floor and walked down the hallway, checking in every room, making sure nothing was going on. He got to the room where they kept the Mirror of Erised and stopped. There was someone in there. James looked again and recognized Kacie Helms. He smiled softly, remembering how they had actually been starting to get along the last time they had met at the Quidditch Pitch. He said, "Hey Kacie..."

Kacie stared at her reflection, tears springing in her eyes as she stared at the image of her brother, of her best friend. Seeing Sirius in the mirror was comforting, but it wasn't the same as him actually being there. Now that she was alone, there was no one there to keep the dam closed, no one there to be with her as she allowed the guilt and grief to overwhelm her. She still couldn't fully comprehend it. How could he be gone? She had just written a letter to him a week ago, had spoken to him over the phone not to long after. She knew it had been against the rules, but Dumbledore had made several exceptions on her part in the past. He had allowed her several forms of communication with him, for some reason she couldn't understand.
As she stared at the mirror, a tear escaped. She did not bother to catch it, merely watched her reflection as the tear made its way slowly down her cheek. The tear lingered on her skin for a moment longer, before letting go. As it made contact with the ground, more followed in its place. She took deep breaths in an attempt to calm herself, but it was no use. Her eyes were glued to Thomas, her heart breaking all over again. He was gone. She would never be able to talk, to joke, to touch him again. She was now, in almost every sense of the word, alone. But for now, she could imagine he was still here. For now, she could pretend.
Kacie jumped when she heard the door open, quickly brushing the tears from her face and sniffling. "Hey Kacie..." Kacie turned, taking in the sight of James Potter. Last time they had encountered one another, they had been on somewhat good terms. She wasn't sure if he'd been there during her breaking point in the Dining Hall, but she knew that the last time they had talked, it had been before....before everything stopped. She offered him a small smile, turning her head away in hopes of him not seeing the lingering tears in her eyes. "Hey James," she replied hoarsely, "What're you doing out so late?"

James sighed softly as he saw Kacie jump when he came in. That hadn't really been his intention. He was kind of over sneaking up on people and purposely trying to scare them. That was more Sirius' job now. He gave Kacie a small smile, running a hand through his raven black hair. He scolded himself for doing it. It was a habit he had when he was nervous. The only problem was, he wasn't really nervous right now. He actually found himself wondering if Kacie would be alright with him being here, or if they would get into another battle of words like they had at the beginning of their encounter in the Quidditch Pitch a while. James let a pleased smile come across his features as he heard Kacie talking to him. Good, they were still on good terms. He shrugged slightly at her question and said, "No reason really. I just couldn't sleep, I got too much stuff on my mind. Plus I had to do my rounds anyway..."
After he answered, he frowned slightly. Her voice had sounded weird. He shrugged it off, deciding that it was probably not the best time to talk about it. He looked at her again, studying her for the briefest time. He knew she didn't really like being stared at, but there was something different about her. James just couldn't put his finger on it. He knew it probably had something to do with what had happened in the Great Hall a week ago. Or however long it had been. All James remembered was Sirius going after her. He had known the two of them were friends and everything at that point, and he had been happy to see Sirius go after her. Sirius needed to be there for someone else besides James and Remus.
James saw her turn her head away as he came out of his thoughts. He sighed as he looked at her again, studying her closely. He frowned, wanting to ask her how she was, wanting her to be able to talk to him, but he knew she probably wouldn't. They hadn't been on good terms long enough. Finally he decided he had to say something and so he took a deep breath and then said, "What about you? Why are you out here so late?"

Kacie had turned her gaze back to the mirror when she realized that it was James who had wandered into the room, a bit more relaxed than when he had first opened to door. She stared at the reflection of the trio in the mirror, a mixture of grief and longing taking over her features. She was sitting rather close to the mirror, and as she gazed at Thomas, she reached out a hand and pressed it against the cool glass gently, wishing that beyond anything to be able to touch his face and speak to him, instead of settling for a cold and bitter piece of glass. She could faintly hear James say, "No reason really. I just couldn't sleep, I got too much stuff on my mind. Plus I had to do my rounds anyway..." Kacie gave a small smile to the mirror in response, not bothering to say anything to his statement. She found that she could not afford to give James the attention she would have otherwise. She couldn't afford to be polite at the moment.
Kacie heard him sigh as she stared at the mirror, as if he had made an expectation for her that she had not met. She prayed that wouldn't ask what was wrong with her. He may have been Sirius' friend, but that did not mean she was willing to befriend Potter so easily, as well. Sure, they had somewhat resolved their differences between one another on the Quidditch Pitch that one night, but that did not mean that she was going to start spilling her darkest secrets and deepest desires to him because of it. It took a lot to earn her trust, and even Sirius, despite how quickly she had grown to care for him, still did not know everything about her, and she did not trust him completely, as she was beginning to feel she should. She knew that he was trustworthy, that he would rather die than to utter a word she had said to him in confidence, but that didn't mean she didn't have her reasons. It wasn't that she didn't trust him, it was more like she was embarrassed, nervous about opening up to him. What could she say? She really was a shy person. She heard Potter take a deep breath and then say, "What about you? Why are you out here so late?"
Kacie frowned. "I needed a change of scenery," she replied, forcing her gaze to turn away from the mirror. She knew that the longer she stared, the harder it would be to leave. She knew everything there was to know about the Mirror of Erised, as she had encountered it so many times in the past. She knew she couldn't very well say that she wanted to see her brother again, though that was the real reason. She had merely made her earlier statement on reflex, realizing that it was what she normally did in a situation such as this: lie. As a new thought occured to her, she looked at James, a hint of worry in her emerald eyes. "Don't tell Sirius I was here," she asked, "He'd kill me if he found out I was wandering the school by myself." A referance to the torture she had endured thanks to the Slytherins hung in the air, and she hoped beyond anything that James wouldn't breathe a word of this to Sirius. She was tired of their constant arguing.

James looked at the girl in front of him once again, wishing there was something he could do or say to make her feel better, or something. He knew they werent the best of friends, but they were at least on good terms. To James, that meant that she was basically one of his friends, and he would do anything to make her feel better. Granted, he knew she wouldn't open up to him enough, but hey, he was going to be there for her if she needed him, even if she didn't like it. He once again ran his hand through his hair, wondering what he should do, or say. He didn't want to upset her, but he hated having lulls in the conversation at the same time.
He heard her reply and gave her a small, knowing smile. He knew what it was like to want to have a change of scenery. That was just about the only reason he liked being Head Boy. He could just go off whenever he wanted, and claim he had rounds to do. He didn't do that very much, because the guys knew when he was lying, but as much as he loved them, sometimes he just needed a break. He needed some time to go be himself, or just be alone for a little bit. Especially now with him having Lily as a girlfriend. He wanted to spend time with her, but he also spent time with the guys. So when he wasnt with Sirius or Remus, he was with Lily, and when he wasn't with any of them, he was just somewhere relaxing by himself. He finally said, "Yah, I know what you mean Kacie, I feel the same way sometimes..."
The next thing James heard her say kind of caught him off guard. What was she talking about? He sighed softly to himself, knowing that he shouldn't be keeping things from his best friend, especially when it came to the girl who James figured might be the one to finally get through to Sirius. James finally looked at Kacie again and nodded slowly before saying, "I won't tell him Kacie.....but just know that I don't like it. I've never kept secrets from him before, and I know he wouldn't like it if he found out it involved the girl that I assume he actually likes...he truly does care about you Kacie..." James could vividly recall the look that came into Sirius' eyes that day in the Great Hall, and how relieved he had looked when James had told him to go after her. He found himself wondering if Sirius would really settle down with Kacie. James hoped he would, he needed to have someone else besides the Marauders to be there for him.

Thomas stared right back at her from the mirror, his smile loving yet teasing at the same time, as if taunting her. Hahahaha, you can't catch me. A single tear slid down her cheek as she gazed at her dead brother, biting her lower lip to stop the moan of heartbreak and agony from escaping her. Her gaze flickered to Sirius' face in the mirror, though it always made it's way back to Thomas. A shaky breath escaped her, and she quickly wiped away the tear that had made it's way to her chin. Her throat ached painfully, but she would not allow herself to cry anymore tears. She couldn't allow it.
James gave her a small, knowing smile at her reply, as if he knew just what she was going through, and she resisted the sudden urge to snap at him. He couldn't know what she was going through. He had no siblings to mourn the loss of; as far as she knew, his parents were still alive and speaking to him. He was still loved by all those he loved. He finally said, "Yah, I know what you mean Kacie, I feel the same way sometimes..." Kacie offered him a small smile, deciding to ignore her irrational anger, and replied, "Yeah, sometimes I just...I just need to get away from everything, you know? Have time to myself to think..."
James looked a bit caught off guard by her request. He clearly didn't understand what she was talking about. She didn't want Sirius to know she was out of the Room of Requirement because she would never hear the end of it. Since their agreement it had felt as though he were going a bit overboard. She appreciated his efforts, but she was her own person. She hated being cooped up all the time, waiting for him just so she could go outside and breathe a breath of fresh air. It was ridiculous. James finally looked at Kacie again and nodded slowly before saying, "I won't tell him Kacie.....but just know that I don't like it. I've never kept secrets from him before, and I know he wouldn't like it if he found out it involved the girl that I assume he actually likes...he truly does care about you Kacie..." Kacie smiled gratefully at him, though she did not remove herself from the cold stone floor. "Thank you," she said sincerely, "I know you don't like it. I don't like keeping things from him, either, but he tends to go a bit overboard at times. If he found out, I'd never be able to step outside the Room of Requirement again," she offered a small chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. She was sure that James knew the reasons behind her confinement, so she felt no need to elaborate for him. She hated the idea of keeping her midnight endeavors from Sirius, but she really had no choice.

James sighed softly to himself as he continued to watch Kacie look at herself in the mirror. He had heard about the mirror, and knew she was just looking at herself. He ran a hand through his hair, wishing he could see what she saw. He knew she was still upset about her brother dying, which he didn't blame her, and he briefly found himself wondering if that's who she saw in the mirror. James also wondered if she felt enough for Sirius to maybe be seeing him also. He shrugged to himself, deciding that it probably was best if he didn't ask, and just listened if Kacie wanted to talk.
He heard her voice, and it dragged him out of his thoughts. He nodded and said, "Yup..." He thought a moment and said, "Ask anyone, I'll just go off by myself somtimes, just to get away from everything...even though I love Sirius and Remus, eventually you need a break from them, even if they are your best friends.." He knew the words were true. He had been more distant from them then normal, but that was due to the whole thing that happened between them and Lily in the common room. Sure they had made up, but Sirius still seemed a little sore about it, and James figured he was just more worried about Kacie and hadn't had time to get over it yet.
James sent her a soft smile, more reassuring than anything. He figured that's what she needed right now. She needed to know he would keep his word and not tell Sirius. He didn't blame her for not wanting Sirius to know. Sirius could get really protective sometimes, hence why he turned into a dog when they transformed. James knew what it was like. He sighed and laughed a little and said, "Yah, he can be like that sometimes..." He sighed softly and said, "May I suggest something? I know you know him probably about as well as I do...but I know he probably hasn't told you about what's going on between us right now.." He sighed softly and said, "He's having a rough time with me right now, because of some stuff....and I'm sure that's why he's being like that to you." James shrugged and said, "I don't know why he'd do that...but I think he thinks he's going to lose you...I think you just need to talk to him...try and convince him you'll be alright. Trust me...he'll eventually listen.."

Kacie felt the familiar stabbing pain in her chest, and she forced herself to look away from the mirror quickly. It did nothing to lessen the realization of the loss of her brother, but it helped her to catch her breath. She thought that finding the mirror would help her deal with the loss, yet it only seemed to make it that much harder to let Thomas go. She stood up abruptly, turning away from the mirror and giving James a small smile. "What do you see when you look in the mirror?" She asked curiously. A part of her knew that asking him this would require an answer on her part, as well, but she would try to get through it. It was only fair, after all, though she had a feeling she already knew what James would see upon looking into the Mirror of Erised.
Potter nodded and said, "Yup..." He paused for a moment, then said, "Ask anyone, I'll just go off by myself somtimes, just to get away from everything...even though I love Sirius and Remus, eventually you need a break from them, even if they are your best friends.." Kacie chuckled at his comment. "I agree," she said, "Sometimes you just need some time for yourself."
James' smile seemed enough to reassure Kacie that most everything was alright. She gave him a small smile in return, more a silent statement that she understood what he meant. She appreciated it more than anything that he was willing to help her, even if it was by lying to his best friend about her whereabouts. It felt as if they were really stepping out of aquaintanceship and into a real friendship. James sighed and laughed a little and said, "Yah, he can be like that sometimes..." Kacie chuckled along quietly as he sighed softly and said, "May I suggest something? I know you know him probably about as well as I do...but I know he probably hasn't told you about what's going on between us right now.." She remained dutifully silent as he continued, "He's having a rough time with me right now, because of some stuff....and I'm sure that's why he's being like that to you." She nodded in understanding. Though she hadn't heard it from Sirius himself, she had a strong sense of intuition. She knew that his anxiousness wasn't just because of her, and she had had a feeling that Potter had to do with it. It just made sense. If something was bothering his brother, it was bothering Sirius. James shrugged and said, "I don't know why he'd do that...but I think he thinks he's going to lose you...I think you just need to talk to him...try and convince him you'll be alright. Trust me...he'll eventually listen.." Kacie snorted, rolling her eyes almost sarcastically. ""I don't think he'll be convinced on letting me roam the castle on my own until after he's graduated, and I doubt it will be a willing decision." She stared at her hands for a moment, contemplating something. Why would Sirius care about her, let alone her well-being, anyway? She was no one important, no one special. She was a muggleborn, a mudblood, with no real friends due to her damned unwilling affiliation with the Slytherins and no living relatives willing to speak with her. Brushing her hair out of her face, she muttered, "I don't know why he'd care. He doesn't need someone like me."

James once again was silent for a moment. He sensed that Kacie was just here, thinking. He had a strong feeling that she was thinking about many things. That thought made him frown. It was never a good idea to have too many things on your mind, he knew that from experience, especially with all the stuff he had going on right now. Sure he liked some of the stuff, like hanging out with Lily and his friends and being Quidditch Captain, but he hated going to classes, homework, and head boy duties. He couldn’t help it. He just wasn’t the kind of guy that like to do that stuff. Now this whole thing with Sirius was stressing him out, but he knew everything would work out. It just had to, and that was the end of it.
The next thing he heard kind of surprised him, and he raised his eyebrows slightly at the Slytherin. He shrugged it off and then went and stood in front of the mirror. In all honesty, the black haired Gryffindor was a little nervous to look at the mirror, but no one would have known, and he sure as hell wouldn’t have admitted to it. Finally he looked up into the mirror and smiled softly when he saw what was there. He saw himself, and Lily, and they seemed happy. They didn’t seem much older than they were now, but James didn’t worry about that, because in the background he could see Sirius and Remus, standing behind him. That was what James Potter truly desired. He just wanted to be happy and for everything to work out for him for once in his life. He smiled softly and looked at Kacie and said, “I see myself and Lily…and Sirius and Remus are standing behind us, smiling and talking to me….” He shook his head slightly, telling himself that it was just a mirror, and that life threw curveballs. He looked back at Kacie and said, “What do you see?” He once again paused and then said, “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to…”
He smiled softly as he heard Kacie chuckle at what he said. He almost had to laugh when she agreed with him. He knew she only chuckled because he had mentioned about needing to get away from his best friends, who were the only people who knew him better than he knew himself. Besides that, James didn’t usually get much time to himself between everything he had to do. He liked to just go and relax somewhere, without any pressure from anyone. He ran a hand through his hair, taking a deep breath. This was actually kind of relaxing, as hard as it might be to believe. James liked talking to Kacie, and it wasn’t stressful.
Well, it hadn’t been stressful until they had began talking about Sirius. It was alright though. James and Sirius were slowly getting over their differences with the whole Lily thing, and James knew it would only be a matter of time until they were acting like nothing ever happened. He couldn’t help but laugh as he heard Kacie and shook his head. He thought for a moment and then said, “In all honesty, Sirius is never convinced of anything…except the fact that his friends will always be there for him. It will take some time, but I know he will come around…” He listened to the next thing she said and found himself frowning. He didn’t know what to say, so he decided to just wing it. He took a deep breath and said, “That’s where your wrong. He does need someone like you. He needs someone besides his friends who can be there for him, he needs to settle down, or I have a feeling he never will…” Even James had learned that a girlfriend was a good thing. Now if only Sirius could do the same. He sighed and said, “I have a feeling he’s leaning towards you..and in all honesty, I think he made a good choice..”

If someone had told her two years ago that she would be standing in front of the Mirror of Erised, asking James Potter what he saw, she would have called them daft. The content look on his face as he stared into the mirror made her smile softly. That look reminded her of previous encounters with Sirius. She had never felt more content, or at peace, when she was with Sirius, and she could only imagine that his reflection included Lily Evans. Though she didn't know them personally, she couldn't help but hope that everything worked out for them. Everyone deserves happiness in their life, if only for a little while. James smiled softly and looked at Kacie and said, “I see myself and Lily…and Sirius and Remus are standing behind us, smiling and talking to me….” He shook his head slightly, as if ridding himself of a thought, and looked back at Kacie. “What do you see?” He once again paused and then said, “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to…” Smiling at his assurance, she shook her head. "It's alright," she replied, glancing at the mirror again. She stared at it with a wistful smile. "I see my brother. And Sirius," she said. Biting her lower lip, she tore her gaze away from the mirror. "I shouldn't have even come down here, but...I just wanted to see Thomas again..."
He smiled softly as Kacie chuckled at what he said. He ran a hand through his hair, taking a deep breath. She almost couldn't believe it. This was probably the first real civil conversation they had with one another, without a third party used as a buffer when things grew tense. She liked it. It was strangely comfortable, almost like conversing with someone she considered to be a friend. After a moment of silence filled with deep thought, she blurted, "Can we call a truce?"
He laughed at Kacie's comment and shook his head. “In all honesty, Sirius is never convinced of anything…except the fact that his friends will always be there for him. It will take some time, but I know he will come around…” A sudden idea struck her, and, staring up at James with mischevious green eyes, she whispered, "Wanna help me get him to come around?" At her next statement, however, James frowned, clearly not satisfied with her words. He took a deep breath and said, “That’s where your wrong. He does need someone like you. He needs someone besides his friends who can be there for him, he needs to settle down, or I have a feeling he never will…” She surprised herself by chuckling. "Do you know how much alike we are? Isn't he supposed to be with someone that balances out his personality, not matches it?" He sighed and said, “I have a feeling he’s leaning towards you..and in all honesty, I think he made a good choice..” Kacie felt her cheeks heat up at the compliment, pleased that at least one of Sirius' friends thought they were a good match for one another. In response, she said with a laugh, "Thank you, I guess...He speaks fondly of you, by the way. He really cares about his friends. Though, I am particularly glad that I'm not around to listen to your constant 'Lily-rants', as he likes to call them." On a serious note, however, she added, "How's it going with her, anyway? Are you having any luck? I'd speak to her for you myself, but I don't think she's particularly fond of Slytherins anymore."

James couldn't help but still be slightly shocked that he was standing in front of the Mirror of Erised. He smiled as he continued to look into the mirror. He was glad that the mirror was showing him this, although he knew that this wasn't what was meant to be. Something bad was going to happen, he just had a feeling, and usually when James got a feeling, it wasn't usually wrong. He smiled at Kacie as she returned the favor and told him what she saw. He frowned slightly and said, "I'm sorry Kacie...about your brother.." He studied her for a second and said, "I wish I could tell you it gets easier, but I've never had to deal with anything like this..." He ran a hand through his hair once again and said, "Just know that I'm here for you...as is Sirius I'm sure.."
He looked at Kacie once again, noticing how they were just sitting here in comfortable silence for the moment being. This was the most civil conversation they had ever had, and he was including the almost civil one out on the Quidditch field a month or two back. He heard her voice and had to admit that it took him a moment to figure out what she had said. Once he did figure out what she said he was slightly shocked, but nodded snyways and said, "Yah, of course we can call a truce..." He knew it would be best for the both of them, and it would also give them a chance to become friends. He knew she was already friends, well more than friends, and he hoped that for Sirius sake, he and Kacie could get along.
James raised his eyebrows slightly as he saw the look in Kacie's eyes and couldn't help but chuckle to himself. He then nodded and said, "Sure, just tell me what I can do.." He would do anything to help Sirius and Kacie, especially if Kacie was the one for Sirius. James couldn't help but throw Kacie a small smile and said, "Yes, usually you need a person who balances your personality...but Sirius really isn't your normal person...so I think this is right for him...even if you don't..." James laughed softly and smiled and said, "I'm glad...I speak highly of him to my friends too...and I don't know what I would do without him in my life...I really don't..." He frowned slightly as he thought about everything he and Sirius had been through in these past 7 years. Everything they had been through had just strengthened their friendship, and James was eternally grateful for that.
